Peacock butterfly - dagpauwoog - inachis io - Echinacea purpurea

This peacock butterfly is enjoying the nectar of Echinacea purpurea.
Peacock butterflies get their name from the eyespots on their wings, which resemble those on the tail of the peacock. Peacock butterflies are found in orchards, gardens and other places where there are lots of flowers. Adults hibernate through the winter in hollow trees, rock crevices, stone walls and even in houses

De dagpauwoog heeft 4 opvallende oogvlekken op de bovenkant van de vleugels, die dienen om vijanden af te schrikken. Hij overwintert op zolders en in kelders of holen.
De vlinder komt in vrijwel heel Europa voor en heeft geen echte voorkeur aan een bepaald leefgebied. Daarom kan hij op veel verschillende plekken worden aangetroffen: in tuinen, maar ook in bloemrijke graslanden en wegbermen, in parken en klaver- en luzernevelden.
