Kekeno - New Zealand Fur Seal #01

New Zealand fur seal or Kekeno (Maori language) are the most common seals around the coast of the South Island of New Zealand. In Australia their common name is Southern Fur SeaL. Unlike true seals they have visible ears and do not have a blubber layer so they have fur for warmth. Time after time they were hunted for their fur. Protection caused their number to increase just in time. Now you can see them on a lot of locations on the Southern Island.
The pups are born in early December. The mother nurses the young for over 9 months. Time enough to grow big and strong.
Kekeno are very good swimmers and weaned pups will turn up almost anywhere around New Zealand. A fur seal pup tagged on the west coast of South Island has even been recorded in Australia. On land they sometimes become disoriented and have been found in unusual places such as backyards, drains and streets.
