Het Pater-Davidshert of Milu is een bewoner van open terrein met veel water en van moerassen. Waterplanten zijn hun favoriete kostje.
Oorspronkelijk leefde dit hert in China. Père Armand David, een Franse missionaris in China, ontdekte dit hert in 1865 toen het al bijna uitgeroeid was. Uit een wildpark bij Peking werd een aantal dieren overgebracht naar Europese dierentuinen en in de jaren 80 van de vorige eeuw is een aantal Pater Davidsherten met succes geherintroduceerd in een reservaat in China.

Père David's Deer, Elaphurus davidianus, or Milu, is believed to be native to the subtropics of China and prefers marshland. It grazes on a mixture of grass and water plants.
Father Armand David (Père David) was a French missionary working in China. He was the person that in 1865 made known of this species of deer to Western science.
Nowadays Père David’s Deer is known only in captivity. The current population stems from a few deer that were illegally transported to European countries and bred for the preservation of the species. Père David's Deer are found in zoos around the world.
