The end of September and the elk are (cervus canadensis) in season.
Their antlers have reappeared and they are set for the battle for the harem. The strongest male deer tries to gather as many females as possible.
During the mating season, the male is mostly busy chasing away competitors. He hardly eats, and at the end of the mating season has lost about a quarter of its body weight.
'Wapiti' is the Indian name for these deer. It means 'lightly coloured or white deer'. A hundred years ago, elk were the most common mammal in the Rockies.
