Blaarkop - Blister head & calve

The Blaarkop or blister head cow got its name because of the red or black ring around the eyes: blaarkop is Dutch for blister head. The body is solid red or black, while the head is white with a red or black ring (blister) around the eyes; the tail has a white tip. Its main breeding area is in the province of Groningen in the Netherlands.
The breed has been mentioned as early as the 14th century.
It is a dual-purpose cow: suited for both meat and dairy production. Unlike many other races, the Blaarkop has few problems with natural barriers. This makes him very suited for grazing in (wet) nature reserves.
